Leadership at AHN Saint Vincent Hospital

AHN Saint Vincent has served the greater Erie, Pa. region, and parts of New York and Ohio, nearly 150 years. Today, Saint Vincent provides access to obstetrical care, cardiovascular surgery, cancer care, emergency care, neurosurgery, diabetes care, orthopaedics surgery, and many other advanced specialties.

Christopher Clark, DO
President, Saint Vincent Hospital

Christopher C. Clark, DO, MHA has been President of AHN Saint Vincent Hospital since June of 2017, and he also leads Grove City and Westfield Memorial hospitals. Born at Saint Vincent and a lifelong resident of the Erie community, Dr. Clark is a practicing family physician who has served in a number of leadership roles at the hospital over many years, including Senior Vice President of Medical Affairs, Chief Quality Officer, and Director of Medical Education.

Dr. Clark has also worked as a medical director for Highmark Inc., responsible for promoting value-based strategies and population health interventions to employers.

Active in many community and professional organizations, Dr. Clark serves on the Board of Directors for Penn State Behrend, Erie Catholic Preparatory School, the United Way, VNA of Erie County, and the Erie Downtown Development Corporation. He is also currently the Vice Chair of the Erie Regional Chamber and Growth Partnership.

Dr. Clark has been active in fundraising for the Children’s Miracle Network, the Sisters of St. Joseph Neighborhood Network, the March of Dimes and the American Heart Association.  He is also a past President and board member for the Erie County Medical Society, and is a member of the Hospital Association of Pennsylvania, American Academy of Family Physicians, American College of Healthcare Executives and Pennsylvania Medical Society.

He earned his undergraduate degree from Boston College, a medical degree from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and completed his residency at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, Pa. Dr. Clark also received a master of health administration degree from the Pennsylvania State University and a graduate certificate in gerontology from Gannon University.

Karen Surkala
Chief Operating Officer, Saint Vincent Hospital

An accomplished healthcare executive with significant experience in the Northwestern Pennsylvania health care market, Karen Surkala is Chief Operating Officer of AHN Saint Vincent Hospital.

She previously served as President of AHN Westfield Memorial Hospital in 2019, and as its vice president and administrator there from 2007 to 2011. Earlier in her career, she was CEO of Select Specialty Hospital, a long-term care facility in Erie, and served as a senior vice president at AHN Saint Vincent from 2012-2015.

Ms. Surkala oversees day-to-day operations at the hospital and its affiliated facilities and programs in the community, working with on-site and network-level leaders to help guide the hospital’s long-term strategy.

Daniel Muccio, MD
Chief Medical Officer, Saint Vincent Hospital

As the CMO of AHN Saint Vincent Hospital, Daniel Muccio, MD, provides physician input to the executive leader team and is responsible for overseeing the affairs of the medical staff. He also provides administrative oversight to the graduate medical education programs and the pharmacy.

Dr. Muccio is board certified in neurological surgery and continues to practice. He has a subspecialty interest in the management of brain tumors using stereotactic radiosurgery. In his more than 15 years at Saint Vincent, he has fulfilled many leadership roles, including chair of the Department of Surgery, chief of the Division of Neurosurgery, chair of the Bylaws Committee and Medical Director of both the Gamma Knife and Spine Centers.

Prior to joining the medical staff at Saint Vincent, he ran a private neurosurgical practice and held privileges at the Excela Hospitals in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania.

Dr. Muccio received his medical degree from Temple University Medical School in Philadelphia. He completed a neurosurgical residency at the Medical College of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. He obtained his undergraduate education at The College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia, with a B.S. in biology. He is a fellow of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, and an active member the American Medical Association, the Pennsylvania Medical Society and the Erie County Medical Society.

Sallie Piazza, BSN
Chief Nursing Officer, Saint Vincent Hospital

Sallie Piazza, BSN, MS, RN, CNML, CNOR serves as the Chief Nursing Officer of Saint Vincent Hospital and Westfield Memorial Hospital.  She has practiced nursing in direct care capacities in surgical services and medical-surgical units. An experienced nurse leader, she has previously held several leadership positions including CNO and earlier, Director of Surgical Services at Brooks Memorial Hospital.  At Saint Vincent Hospital, she has been Director of Professional Development, and Director of the Medical Surgical Division.

She received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Alfred State College, a Master of Science in Health Care Administration from Ashford University, and has recently completed a business certification from Cornell University.  She is published in such professional journals as AORN and Ambulatory Today.  She is a member of AORN, AONL, PNOL, and her certifications include Certified Nurse, Operating Room and Certified Nurse Manager and Leader.

Sallie is active in professional nursing organizations.  She is a former school board member in Chautauqua County, and currently serves on the advisory boards of Mercyhurst University; Jamestown Community College; Mercy Center for Women; the Boy Scouts of America, Chautauqua County; and Boys and Girls Club of Chautauqua County. She is an active volunteer with Northern Chautauqua Catholic Schools and at the Dunkirk, New York, food kitchen.

Rand Levis
Chief Financial Officer, Saint Vincent Hospital

Randolph Levis, CFO for AHN Saint Vincent, has more than twenty-five years of progressive and diverse health care experience within tertiary care hospitals, community hospitals, specialty care hospitals, physician practice networks, medical research and in both non-profit and for-profit healthcare.

He previously served as Vice President of Finance at St. Luke’s University Health Network in Bethlehem, Pa., which is comprised of seven hospitals in two states with over 500 employed physicians and 9,000 employees.  His connection to Erie includes his position as Controller of Health South Rehabilitation hospital from 1990 to 1999.

Mr. Levis is a certified management accountant and holds a Master of Business Administration degree from Waynesburg University. He earned an undergraduate degree in Accounting and Business Administration from Edinboro University.

He is a member of the Healthcare Financial Management Association and the Institute of Management Accountants.
