Know what to expect when you need emergency care

A medical emergency can be frightening. The information below will help you know what to expect if you happen to need emergency medical services at our hospital.

Outpatient emergency care

Bring personal identification and insurance information with you (if possible), so we can create or update your medical record. If you don’t have it, don’t worry. If you arrive in need of emergency medical care, you’ll be treated with or without ID or insurance info.

You’ll be seen by a registered nurse when you arrive who will ask questions about your symptoms. Other medical professionals may also evaluate you. This process — known as triage — helps the emergency team determine what lab work, X-rays, or other tests are needed. Following triage, you’ll either be taken directly to a room or to the results pending area, where your care and ordered tests will begin. Team members will continue to monitor you while we wait for test results.

We understand the importance of family and friends during an emergency. However, we limit the number of visitors in the treatment room so we can focus on your medical treatment. See current AHN Visitation Policy for more information.

Discharge and after care follow-up

If your condition stabilizes after treatment and you don’t need to stay in the hospital, you’ll receive instructions about the type of follow-up care and treatment we recommend. Make sure you review and understand these discharge instructions. We’ll be happy to answer any questions so you can be sure of what you’ll need to do when you head home. Some patients may need to schedule a follow-up appointment with their primary care physician or other specialist following an emergency visit.

If you need inpatient follow up care

After your health emergency has been diagnosed and initially treated, you and your physician will discuss whether you should be admitted to the hospital or return home. If you need to be admitted, you will stay in the ER until your room is ready and you can be safely transferred to the best location in the hospital to continue your care.
